A Look Inside the KWC Process

If you've found yourself sitting there wondering, "what am I getting myself into?" then I think this is going to be a spot for you to land comfortably. If you've never worked with a designer before (or even if you have), I've created this post to give you some insight into what you can expect when working with me.

It's my hope that, in the near future, I will be able to break this down even further and do feature posts about specific services, but for now, it's important to me—and more importantly, probably to you—that you get a sense of what working together would look like. So here's the gist:

Step 1:

*Sings* "Getting to know you, getting to know all about you."

The King and I? Anyone? Nope, just me? Okay that's fine. Moving on...

In all seriousness, that's what this first step is all about—plus a few crossing of the t's and dotting of the i's. First thing you'll need to do is fill out my contact form to get in touch. Perhaps you've already done this and you're perusing this post while you wait for me to get back to you. If so, first part: complete, you over-achiever, you! If not, head on over to my contact page when you're done and let's get to it!

Not-so-subtle attempt at a CTA out of the way...

Next I'll review your inquiry and get back to you to fine tune the details. We can either schedule a brief consultation call discuss your project further or—more commonly—I'll follow up with an email to connect us, then send a questionnaire based on your inquiry. This will help me gauge where you are in the process of thinking about your new brand or website, while allowing you the time and space to consider your project. And fear not: wherever you are is perfect by me; I'm here every step of the way.

A brief note about forms: these are becoming my new favorite method of gathering early insight, as it gives me the chance to ask the questions I need to while still giving you time, unpressured by my (hopefully quiet) breathing on the other line, to consider your wants and needs.

Once I feel like I have a solid grasp on your project, I'll draft your proposal, which will be 100% customized to your specific needs. You'll receive this through my chosen business management platform, Bonsai, and will include an outline of the project, a list of deliverables, a general timeline (the more detailed version comes later), and of course, the cost. This may be in the form of a singular flat fee, or there may be multiple options (and price-points) to choose from, depending on where we land after our consultations.

Once that is approved, the last part of the logistical puzzle is the contract and project deposit. I only take on a small number of clients at a time and schedule meticulously, so in order to book time in my calendar, I require a 50% non-refundable deposit before we can officially begin. But then, we can dive on in.

Step 2:

Create + Refine

Time to get down to the nitty-gritty with a discovery call. This is usually a one-hour chat designed to give us the opportunity to peel back the layers and get to the heart of what brought you to KWC. This can be via Zoom or, if you're local-ish to middle-of-nowhere Delaware, an in-person confab. Regardless, the goal is for me to walk away knowing exactly where to take your design and for you to walk away feeling confident it's in good hands.

Once we have that meeting scheduled, I'll go ahead and schedule the remainder of the project in Asana, my tried-and-true scheduling software. This will include all the milestones of the project, clearly defining the what, who, and when for each.

So for real now, the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted. Now it's time for design. I'll take every precious detail you've shared with me and begin doing what you hired me to do: create. My internal process is different for every piece, but you can assume there'll be some research, ideation, and of course, the design. Then we do the beautiful dance of our back-and-forth, refining together until we've hit our mark.

Step 3:

Release

This is it. The culmination of all the discovery, exploration, design, finessing: the final delivery. Once I have your verbal (or written) approval, I'll send over a release form that will count as the official sign-off. Once I have that in-hand, you'll receive all the necessary files and/or resources you'll need to confidently share your new creative with the world.

Perhaps our story ends there or perhaps it's just beginning, but regardless of where we go from there, you can rest assured your project is exactly aligned with your goals, ambition, and—dare I say it, dreams. It sounds cheesy, I know—I've reread it a few times—but I really do mean it. Your experience matters. As I say over on my Services page, it's not just about the product; it's about the process. We are in this together and you deserve to feel heard, supported, and cared for throughout the process. So now for a final CTA, are you ready to get started?
